Saving the Environment: One Copy at a Time

office copier equipmentEveryone is going green these days, that is to say, almost every workplace and office has been taking aim at helping alleviate their unique strain on the environment. Unfortunately, business and the practices within have no signs of stopping. Luckily, there are plenty of things you and your office can do to help the environment when it comes to office copy machines.

First and foremost, make sure you update your equipment to an Energy Star certified machine–that’s the first and easiest step! Make sure when getting rid of your past copiers to dispose of them at proper electronic disposal areas so your upgrade doesn’t, ironically, negatively impact the environment.

Next up is making sure the supplies you’re using are helping to create a greener office environment as well. To start, utilize ink cartridges that can be refilled or purchase manufactured cartridges, both of which help to eliminate the over abundance of certain plastics and inks. In addition, make sure you’re recycling the cartridges being used so they can eventually return to the market.

There are plenty of paper saving tips around, from utilizing recycled paper to not printing unless it’s totally crucial. One thing you can do, when it comes to your copiers, is to set them on duplex, which makes your copier print double sided, theoretically cutting your paper consumption by half.

Xerography: How Copy Machines Function

copy machinesCopy machines have come a long way since their early beginnings at the end of the 18th century. What we now consider to be copy machines have their roots in experiments carried out by Chester Carlson in the late 1930s. He discovered a process, which was later refined and dubbed “xerography.” The main constituent stages in the process are highlighted below:

  1. Charging: The cylindrical drum is electrostatically charged by a high voltage wire called a corona wire or charge roller. This drum has a coating of photoconductive material.
  2. Exposure: A bright lamp illuminates the original document, and the white areas of the original document reflect the light onto the surface of the photoconductive drum. Certain areas of the drum become conductive, while others remain negatively charged, and the result is a latent electrical image on the surface of the drum.
  3. Developing: The toner is positively charged. As the toner is applied to the drum, it is attracted and sticks to the negatively charged areas.
  4. Transfer: The resultant toner image on the surface of the drum is transferred in from the drum onto a piece of paper with a higher negative charge than the drum.
  5. Fusing: The toner is melted and bonded to the paper using heat and pressure rollers.

Office Copiers as Artistic Media?

When running copies of a contract in the office, the potential of office copiers as artistic media may not be the first thing on your mind, but photocopying machines have played at least a minor role in art’s long and varied history.

Also called electrostatic art and copy art, Xerox art is created by putting objects on the glass, or image area, of copy machines and taking a copy of the object in order to produce a black-and-white or color reproduction. If the object to be copied is not flat, or in the case where the cover does not totally cover the object, the image is distorted in some way. The curvature of the object, the amount of light that reaches the image surface, the distance of the cover from the glass all affect the final image, with resulting images often exhibiting a surreal or eerie aesthetic.

The Xerox art movement was particularly prominent in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the Color Xerox art scene starting in 1978 and going on to include postcard stores, gallery exhibits, and Barbara Cushman’s Color Xerox calendar. Two of the practice’s foremost proponents include Jan Hathaway and Carol Heifatz. If your curiosity has been piqued, there are still exhibits to be found in New York and Los Angeles.

Stay Current with Office Copy Machines

Do not let your business fall behind the times. Although it may seem impossible to stay current with the appropriate office equipment and technology, you may be able to do so if you lease rather than buy these supplies. office copy machines

Certain equipment, such as office copy machines, may not need to be the newest models; rather than spend money on getting a machine with features that you may not need, you should save your money and invest it in other technology that needs to be kept current.

For example, it probably behooves you to equip your office with relatively new computers as well as the newest technology. These materials will help your business stay relevant in the fast-paced, always changing marketplace.

Leasing office copy machines will help your business compete on a larger market, even if you run a small company. You may be amazed by the amount of money you are able to save by leasing copy machines. And the more you save, the more projects you may direct those savings towards. In addition to other equipment, you may also funnel money into ad campaigns and other marketing strategies that will help you promote your business.

Know Your Business Environment Before You Choose Office Copiers

When perusing office copiers, there are certain traits that you want your copy machine to have. After all, best copiers are ones that reduce the time, energy, and costs you invest in copying documents. office copiers

A good copy machine reduces the time and effort required for sorting and collating documents. A copier needs to be able to successfully manipulate copy, since not not every document will be the same size as the paper onto which the text is being copied. Therefore, a copy machine that reduces or expands the copy scan to create the desirable size is extremely beneficial.

The best copier is not necessarily the one that costs a fortune or has a plethora of features; it is the machine that best suits your workplace environment and needs. A smaller company may have better success with an uncomplicated, straightforward copy machine that performs easy jobs; otherwise, the copier may cost more money than it generates for the business. A big company that uses the copier on a large-scale may benefit from one that rapidly produce copies and is simple to use; extra features are pointless if they are too complicated for everyone in the office to employ. However, if you have a tech expert on staff to work and service the copy machines, a more advanced copier may benefit your business.

In order to choose the proper copier,  you must first have an understanding of your office atmosphere.

Lyndsay the Librarian and the Guardians of the Office Copiers

copy machine leasingFor two summers straight, my friend Lyndsay managed the machine technicians at her job mainly, if not solely, employed in fixing the copy machines and other office equipment she destroyed.

She works at a large city library and there was a period of time where her magic touch caused the office copiers to convulse at least once a week. Luckily for Lyndsay, her aunt holds a high position at the library; otherwise, she may have been out of a job!

Lyndsay claims that the copiers would start acting up if she so much as looked at them. I never witnessed her path of destruction first hand, but it is certainly legendary. One of the machine techs was finally more or less personally assigned to her. If she mentioned that she had to make copies, several other employees immediately offered to do it for her (she tried not to abuse this power).

This dynamic lasted for two summers, at which point the library upgraded its copiers through a copy machine leasing vendor. For some reason, these new copiers gave her absolutely no trouble; the machine techs were allowed to stop their rotations of guarding the copy machines from her.

As an added bonus, after spending so much time with these two coworkers, she ended up dating one for a year.

The Value of Copy Machines

color copiers
We all need copy machines in an office. Office copiers are the way humans work. We copy more than what we need, we copy what we like. From babies copying their mother’s behavior to the way art is created, copiers are everywhere. And that isn’t a bad thing. Because most of the time, copiers don’t produce exact copies. Sure it all looks the same, but unless you’re very good at copying, the placement of the text may be an eighth of an inch higher than the original or it may be slightly askew. In art, copying leads to variation and possibly even originality.
Think about Andy Warhol’s work. Marilyn Monroe? He just copied her head! And became rich from it! That was his thing – his art was a bunch of copies, resized, with different colors.

Humans appreciate the variations. Because nothing is exactly the same as the original. From twins, to snowflakes, to the lemon chicken your mother makes, it’s all different from the first time. And that’s to be expected. It’s a good thing. Which is why you should invest in quality office copiers. Because there are going to be originals copied, there have to be originals copied. So next time you’re copying something, don’t worry about it being exactly as the original.

Copiers Can Save Your Love Letters

copiersOffice copy machines are very convenient. If ever I come across a document I want to save, I’ll copy it. Heck sometimes I’ll make a couple of copies, because knowing me, I’ll probably lose one and then need the other one later after I’ve put it in a safe place.
Sometimes it’s just a matter of remembering the safe place. So I recently bought a black box with a lock and key. Here I store all of my precious documents as well as some money for a rainy day, which is not photocopied.

Along with my Social Security Card and bank statements, I also use copiers to make duplicates of love letters I’ve been written throughout my life. It’s fun to see how all of the different lovers you’ve had have been distinct and individual, which is all told through their handwriting, the words they use and the tone they take, or took rather, with me.

I wonder if one day they’ll read this collection of letters I’ve used my office copiers to copy. Whether they will feel jealousy, or pride, or another feeling entirely, a longing for the many love letters that could have been had they stayed with me.
